AI Referral Traffic May Understate GEO’s Marketing Value

Search Engine Journal reports that AI referrals may understate GEO’s influence and that ChatGPT visitors convert at a higher rate.

Low referral counts from AI tools may not give marketers a complete picture of how those tools influence purchasing decisions, according to Search Engine Journal. Its report argues that generative engine optimization, or GEO, should not be dismissed solely because AI platforms send relatively little traffic to a website.

The distinction is between a visit that analytics can attribute to an AI platform and the platform’s broader potential influence on a buyer’s decision. A referral count measures traffic reaching a site from a particular source. On its own, it does not necessarily capture every way an AI tool might have contributed to a decision before that visit.

The report also cites research comparing visitors from ChatGPT with visitors from search. It says the ChatGPT group converted at nearly five times the rate of the search group. That comparison suggests marketers should consider the quality of referred visits, as well as their volume, when assessing traffic from AI tools.

The reported difference is not, by itself, proof that every business will see the same result. The comparison describes the visitors covered by the cited research; it should not be treated as a universal conversion benchmark. Marketers evaluating their own performance still need to look at how visitors behave on their sites.

For marketing teams, the issue is therefore not simply whether AI referrals exceed search referrals. A smaller source can warrant attention if its visitors are more likely to complete a desired action. At the same time, conversion data for referred visitors and the possible influence of AI on buying decisions are separate considerations, so neither should be assumed to explain the other in full.

What this means for marketers

Review AI referral visits alongside conversions rather than judging GEO by traffic totals alone. Compare sources using a consistent definition of conversion, and treat any gap between them as a starting point for investigation, not a guarantee of future performance. Keep the limits of referral data in mind when assessing the possible influence of AI on buyers.
